To mark Circular Economy Day (March 15), the Municipality of Lima, in collaboration with Enel Peru and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), organized the "Transition to a Circular Economy Week" from March 14 to 18, 2022. The event coincided with "Responsible Consumption Day" and forms part of a Circular Economy Strategy for the Province of Lima 2022-2030.
What did this initiative consist of?
Transition to a Circular Economy Week took place online. It consisted of multiple opportunities for discussion, such as round tables, forums, workshops, Enel's design thinking session, and an on-site Ecofair.
Attending the different activities were: Enel Peru, government agencies including the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Production and representatives from the private sector and civil society, and international stakeholders such as the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Delegation of the European Union in Peru, C40 and the Circular Economy Coalition of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The event discussed the opportunities and challenges of applying a circular economy in regional planning and promoting a public and private management approach.
The forum titled "How are cities implementing circularity?" included Bogota, Buenos Aires, Madrid, and Santiago de Chile and was an opportunity to share best practices amongst different cities.
Alessio Fasano, Sustainability Manager of Enel Peru, said: "As Enel Peru, we seek to promote circular economy as a model in which we rethink the use of materials and energy, as well as the use of goods and services from a circular perspective, to improve the quality of life of citizens and have a positive economic and environmental impact. These discussion forums are important for promoting principles and fostering change."
It is important to note that the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima is currently preparing the Local Circular Economy Strategy, which must include the participation of district municipalities. For that reason, Enel and ECLAC included the districts in the Declaration of Commitment of Local Governments for a Circular Economy, a proclamation of which the city of Lima is a signatory.
The mayor of Lima, Jorge Muñoz, extended the invitation to the Lima municipality. He highlighted the importance of working in coordination through concrete actions making the transition to a circular economic model possible by extending products' useful life and changing consumer habits to more responsible ones.
During the closure ceremony of the event, Verónica Sáenz, Head of Circular Economy of Enel Peru, presented her research's preliminary results on the potential of circularity in Lima that she has been developing along with the Universidad Científica del Sur. "It is necessary to acknowledge that circular economy is more than waste management or decarbonization. It is a holistic strategy that goes beyond greenhouse gas reduction and brings many social and economic benefits, such as improved quality of life and decent work opportunities."
